Review:

‘Jiseul’ , which is the title of movie, means a potato in Jeju dialect. The title ‘Jiseul’ represent lives of residents, who hid from massacre of the government in a cave. The residents were fated to die by sweeping of government about North Korean partisans. This is based on a true story that is called by ‘Jeju 4.3 massacre’. In the movie, it is said that the government would kill all the residents, who live in the inland coastline of 15km or more away.

The movie is not cooperating familiar know-how of commercial films. So the movie don’t forget how to smile despite serious subject, which comfort the souls of the victims, and poetic mise-en-scene fill the screen.

That was my first time I see feature film in black and white in the theater besides John Ford Retrospective of the Jeonju International Film Festival. I am not sure of director’s intention to show in black and white despite film was shot in color. However, what is not in doubt is the fact that sight and hearing focus the actors in every scene. Ironically, it is not easy to distinguish faces of the people, who shelter in cave in order to avoid massacre. There are almost the same attire and faces considering poor circumstance of before and after the Korean War. It is assumed that it is more difficult to distinguish them for foreigners. This circumstance is carefully calculated directing? If so, this suggest that massacred residents are ordinary peoples, who can meet in everywhere.

This movie has left powerful impressions, but that is not because the story, which is massacre of civilians. That is neither humorous residents in spite of tragic situation nor beautiful view of Jeju. The reason why I could not take my eyes off the movie is beautiful screen. Especially, the scene where the residents eat potato in the dark cave was very beautiful. There are many good or interesting films. However, I have never seen so beautiful films. Besides, Jeju dialect was very touching, too. In fact, Jeju dialect is difficult to understand for Koreans, so the movie play Korean subtitles. As for me, I understand 10% of lines. The dialect’s nuance is very courteous and soft. Probably, this causes director intentionally use Jeju dialect.

Beautiful scenes and unforgettable mise-en-scene make that time seem more tragic. I offer my deep condolences to all victims such as a girls was never to return for pick up left book in school, an old woman refuse flee with her family in order not to became a burden, a foolish young man brag his legs quick as horse, an old man try to go feeding hog despite his life is in danger, little children followed their parents without even knowing the reason, the residents treated soldier who tried to kill them, etc.

If possible, it is recommended that you watch this movie.

In the movie, soldiers seem to indiscriminately kill civilians like a complete madman. However, there is a complicated situation. Not long after Japanese Rule, actually North Korean communist has seized Jeju island and killed a lot of innocent the right including police. It is because that North Korean communist was opposed to exclusive election by the Southern regime. Fight between both North Korean communist and South Korea has continued until after the Korean War 1953. After the North and the South’s establishment of separate governments, Dr. Syngman Rhee, first president of Korea, has brutally crushed the residents live in inland region, because that be treated as challenge about legitimacy of government. At that time, 95% the houses were completely burned down and the residents escaped to mountainous area. The greatest tragedy was started here. ‘Jeju 4.3 massacre’ had suffered heavy casualties, more than 30,000 people was killed among total population 300,000 people.

지슬, 영화가 갖는 아름다움의 가치

영화의 제목 ‘지슬’은 제주도 방언으로 감자를 뜻한다. 감자라는 제목은 학살을 피해서 동굴로 숨어든 마을 주민들의 목숨을 상징한다. 주민들은 무차별적인 정부의 빨치산 소탕작전으로 죽을 운명에 처하는데 이는 제주 4.3사건이라는 실화를 바탕으로 하고 있다. 영화에서는 해안선 15km이상 떨어진 내륙에 거주하는 모든 민간인은 사살한다고 나온다.

영화는 익숙한 상업영화의 화법을 따르고 있지 않다. 그래서 4.3사건의 무고한 희생자의 넋을 기린다는 무거운 주제에도 불구하고 웃음을 잃지 않고 시적인 미장센으로 화면을 가득 메운다.

장편영화를 극장에서 흑백으로 보는 것은 전주영화제의 존 포드 회고전 외에 처음이다. 칼라로 찍어놓고서 흑백으로 상영한 의도는 잘 모르겠지만, 확실한 것은 모든 장면에서 눈과 귀가 배우들에게 집중된다는 점이다. 그런데 아이러니하게도 학살을 피해서 동굴로 대피하는 사람들의 얼굴을 분간하기가 쉽지 않다. 한국전쟁 전후 가난한 사정을 고려한 고만고만한 차림새와 고만고만한 얼굴들. 외국인들은 출연자를 구별하기 더 어려울 거라고 짐작한다. 주민들이 서로 구별이 안되는 이런 상황도 섬세하게 계산된 연출일까? 만약 그렇다면, 이것은 학살당한 사람들이 어딜가도 흔하게 볼 수 있는 평범한 민간인이라는 것을 시사한다.

이 영화는 굉장히 강렬한 인상을 남기는데, 그것은 민간인 학살이라는 영화의 내용 때문이 아니다. 마음을 흔드는 것은 비극적인 상황에서도 익살스러운 사람들도 아니고, 아름다운 제주도의 전경도 아니다. 한시도 시선을 돌릴 수 없게 만든 것은 다름아닌 아름다운 화면이다. 특히 컴컴한 동굴 속에서 옹기종기 모여 앉아서 감자를 먹는 장면은 정말 아름답다고 말할 수밖에 없다. 훌륭하거나 재미있는 영화는 많이 있다. 그러나 이렇게 아름다운 영화는 흔치 않다. 게다가 영화에 나오는 제주도 방언도 무척 아름답다. 제주도 방언은 한국인도 알아듣기 힘들어서 한국어자막이 표시된다. 내 경우 대사의 한 70%정도 이해한것 같은데, 어감이 상당히 공손하고 부드럽다. 아마 이때문에 감독이 일부러 방언을 사용한 것 같다.

아름다운 장면들과 잊을 수 없는 미장센이 안타까웠던 그 시대를 더 비극적으로 보이게 한다. 학교에 놓고 온 책을 가지러 갔다가 돌아오지 못한 여자아이, 식구들에게 짐이 된다며 피난가기를 거부하는 할머니, 말처럼 잘 뛸 수 있다며 자랑하는 모자란 청년, 생명이 위협받는 상황에서도 돼지밥을 주러 가는 할아버지, 영문도 모르고 엄마아빠를 따라가는 어린 아이들, 자신을 죽이려고 했던 군인의 상처도 돌봐주던 사람들 모두에게 애도를 표한다.

가능하다면 꼭 이 영화를 볼 것을 추천한다.

영화만 본다면 미친 놈들이 마구잡이로 민간인을 사살하는 것으로 보이지만 여기에는 상당히 복잡한 정세가 반영되어있다. 일제식민지에서 벗어난지 얼마후 실제로 공산당이 제주도를 장악해서 경찰과 우익의 무고한 희생을 만들었다. 이는 북한 공산당이 남한정부가 단독으로 선거를 하는 것을 반대했기 때문이다. 공산당과 정부의 싸움은 1950년 한국전쟁 이후로도 점점 극단을 치닫고 1953년까지 이런일은 계속되었다. 남북한이 따로 정부를 수립한 후에 이승만이 제주도를 정권에 대한 정통성의 도전으로 보고 산과 바다의 중간지대를 강경하게 진압했다. 이때, 95%이상의 가옥이 불타버린상태에서 중간지대 주민이 산으로 들어가버린다. 가장 큰 비극은 여기서 시작된다. 제주 4.3사건의 피해가 어느 정도였는가 하면은 30만명의 제주도민 가운데 3만명 정도가 학살당했다.
