Review:
The movie won Deauville Asian Film Festival of France. Actually, I was riveted by not news of winning but actor Yoo Ji-tae’s debut film. It is said that Yoo Ji-te direct some of short film in the meantime. Well, I first knew it this time.
This film realistically portrays the life of illegal immigrants and bottom feeder. In that sense, the movie well deserve a good grade. In this movie, actor Bae Soo-bin plays a man Soo-young who has been abandoned with nothing on the world. I suppose that he was credit delinquent, because his National Identity Registration was cancelled. He has no family and job and money. So what is left now is only a debt. After all, he decided to leave the home. At that time, Mai Ratima appeared in front of him. She was being assaulting by brother-in-law in broad daylight. Being unable to remain a mere spectator, Soo-young rescue her. And Soo-young leave for Seoul with her, who has no place to return. However, overwhelmed by the mighty wall of harsh reality, he lost all hope.
In the movie, Soo-young is narrator. The star of the movie is undoubtedly Ratima. She is an immigrant from Thailand. She married with fool to support her family. Nevertheless, her in-laws shove around her without salary at a factory all day long. Even her brother-in-low was molested her behind her silly husband’s back. She requires keep her prenuptial agreement, which her husband will give some money to her family every month, promise in such circumstances. For that reason, she was being assaulting by in-law and left home. Before she legally acquired Korean nationality, she had an irreversible choice. She is only a stranger in Korea, but not so in the movie. The film followed her range of feeling. This film don’t observed Ratima, but just to see the world in Ratima’s view. The film deserve high praise for this.
In a capital society, if we don’t have money, we have no choice but to live in miserable conditions. Well, it is a fair fact. Nonetheless, I often forget about it. After watching the movie, you will suddenly remember it. There are some stragglers of capitalism, such as old woman who pick up cardboard boxes for making money, homeless who lived in subway to avoid cold, illegal immigrant who don’t receive wages for several months. We know them who we just pretended not to know all the while. The film is fiction, but it hurt my feelings.
In conclusion, there is one more thing I will tell you. After I come back home, I was amazed to see the movie brochure the film distributer. Because the actress who played a Thai Mai Ratima was a Korean. Her name is Park Ji-soo. I shall never forget her performance.

마이 라띠마, 현실을 차라리 외면하고 싶다
이 영화는 프랑스 도빌 영화제에서 수상하였다. 사실, 수상소식보다는 배우 유지태의 데뷔작이란 점이 더 흥미로웠다. 유지태씨는 그동안 몇몇 단편영화를 연출했다고 한다. 물론, 나는 이번에 그 사실을 처음 알았다.
영화는 불법이주민의 삶과 밑바닥 인생을 사실적으로 그리고 있다. 그럼 점에서 영화는 좋은 점수를 받을만하다. 영화에서 배우 배수빈은 가진 것 없이 세상에 버려진 남자 수영을 연기한다. 주민등록증이 말소된 그는 신용불량자로 보인다. 그는 가족도 직장도 돈도 없다. 그에게 남은 것은 빚뿐이다. 결국 그는 고향을 떠날 결심을 한다. 그때, 그의 앞에 마이 라띠마가 나타났다. 그녀는 백주대낮에 시아주버니에게 폭행당하고 있었다. 보다못해 수영이 그녀를 구한다. 수영은 돌아갈 곳이 없는 그녀와 함께 서울로 떠난다. 그러나 그는 냉혹한 현실의 벽 앞에서 절망한다.
영화에서 수영은 화자이다. 진짜 주인공은 바로 라띠마이다. 그녀는 태국 출신의 이민자이다. 그녀는 가족을 부양하기 위해서 바보와 결혼한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 시댁식구들은 그녀를 월급도 주지 않고 공장에서 하루종일 부려먹는다. 심지어 시아주버니는 바보 같은 그녀의 남편 몰래 그녀를 성추행한다. 그런 상황에서도 그녀는 매달 친정에 돈을 보내주겠다는 혼전계약을 지킬 것을 요구한다. 그 때문에 그녀는 시집식구에게 폭행당하고 집을 나간다. 그녀는 정식 국적취득을 앞두고 돌이킬 수 없는 선택을 한다. 그녀는 한국에서는 단지 이방이었지만 영화에서는 그렇지 않다. 영화는 그녀의 감정선을 따라갔다. 영화는 라띠마를 관찰하는 게 아니라 라띠마 입장에서 세상을 바라본다. 그점은 정말 칭찬받을 만하다.
자본주의 사회에서 우리는 돈이 없으면 비참하게 살 수밖에 없다. 물론 당연한 사실이다. 그렇기는 하지만 나는 그 사실을 종종 잊는다. 당신도 영화를 보면 생각이 날 것이다. 돈벌이로 박스를 줍고 다니는 할머니, 추위를 피해서 지하철에서 사는 노숙자들, 임금체불을 당하는 불법체류자들. 우리는 그동안 모른척해왔던 그들을 알고 있다. 영화는 허구지만 내 마음을 아프게 한다.
끝으로 한마디만 더 하겠다. 집으로 돌아온 후에 나는 영화배급사가 제공한 무비 브로셔를 보고 깜짝 놀랐다. 왜냐하면 태국인 마이 라띠마를 연기한 배우가 한국인이었기 때문이다. 그녀의 이름은 박지수다. 그녀의 연기는 결코 잊지 못할 것이다.
